The metro goes underground, the signal drops, and half the games on your phone stop working. A good commute game needs to do three things: work offline, start fast, and let you stop the moment your station arrives.
Here are our favorites for short rides.
Quick picks for a five minute ride
- Blockmoon – One board takes a few minutes, it works fully offline, and your progress is saved on your device. (Our game, closed test)
- Threes! – One swipe at a time. Stop anywhere, pick up exactly where you left.
- Sudoku – Any classic sudoku app with offline puzzles is the perfect commute companion.
- Mini Metro – Fitting, right? Short runs and no internet needed.
- Moon Arrows – Each level is small enough for one stop to the next. (Our game, in development)
For longer rides
- Monument Valley – One chapter is about the length of a longer commute.
- A Monster’s Expedition – A cozy, open world puzzle you can play in small steps.
- Mini crosswords – Offline word puzzle packs are great when you want something with words instead of shapes.
Commute tips
- Download everything before you leave home, including updates and extra levels.
- Turn on airplane mode if a game shows ads online; many games simply skip them offline.
- Keep the brightness low to save battery for the rest of the day.
- Pick games without timers, so a crowded train or a sudden stop doesn’t cost you a run.
